Kitchari and Date Chutney

As part of our Tea Cleanse, this Kitchari recipe is an optional dish that will help our digestive system take a break and reset. It has many of the same delicious spices as The Champ turmeric tea, which is also a great aid for digestion.

If you don't have all of these spices on hand, you will likely be able to find them at your local Indian grocer.


1 cup long grain basmati rice

1 cup split mung daal

1 medium onion

1/4 cup fresh ginger root

1 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp black mustard seeds

1 1/2 Tbsp ghee

4 whole cloves

4 fresh or 2 dried curry leaves

Salt (recommend pink Himalayan) to taste

Black pepper to taste

1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)


1 lemon

1 whole dried red chili (optional)

5 cups water

Vegetables, such as sweet potato, zucchini, or asparagus  (optional)


  1. Put ghee in a pot on medium heat and melt.
  2. Place the black mustard seeds in the pot for a couple of minutes until you start to hear popping sounds. Watch that the heat is not too hot - the seeds may jump out of the pot! 
  3. Add cumin seed and stir and turn heat down.
  4. Add the asafoetida (hing), curry leaves, and chili is using.
  5. Chop onion (can be big pieces) and add. Stir and cover.
  6. Rinse rice and mung daal under cold water until water runs clear.
  7. Stir onion and spice mixture - the onion should be turning translucent.
  8. Add rice and mung daal. Stir.
  9. Add 5 cups of water.
  10. Add turmeric powder, Himalayan salt, black pepper, whole cloves. Stir. 
  11. Turn up heat so water comes to boil.
  12. Slice ginger root (wash, but you don't need to peel, especially if you have organic ginger) into pieces and chop (doesn't have to be fine). Add to pot and stir.
  13. Cover pot. When it comes to a boil, turn down. 
  14. In about 15 minutes the rice and mung daal should have absorbed all the water. (If they are still too firm, add 1/2 cup more water and boil until done.)
  15. Serve in a bowl and top with cilantro and a squeeze of lemon.

Date Chutney

1 tsp fennel seed

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

1/4 tsp ground coriander

1 cup dates, pitted, chopped

1/2 cup orange juice

2 Tbsp fresh ginger root, minced


Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and grind/mix.

Eat with Kitchari and enjoy!
